Just moments before this shot was taken, the
sky and ocean had been bright blue and the mountains were the crispest
of greens. It was so incredibly breath taking, we could not avert our attention
for the time it would have taken to capture it on film. The opposite cliffs
were covered with a dozen water falls dropping into the depths below. I
would say it was the most beautiful site I have ever seen in my entire
life. I felt like I had died and gone to heaven. The spirituality of the
place was quite powerful to the point of being overwhelming.
.
Suddenly, a great bank of misty white clouds
rolled over the mountain on the far side. By the time we could think to
make this photo they were overtaking the tops of the mountain and beginning
to roll down the cliffs.
.
.
As quickly as they rolled down the side of the
of the mountains across from us, they rolled up the side we were visiting.
It was so beautiful and mysterious that once again I felt I was being swallowed
up by Heaven itself. We were sure this must be the weather pattern common
in the area for that time of the day. Most every nick and cranny of the
islands has it's own unique pattern caused by the build up of of clouds
blown in by the trade winds onto the windward side. Blocked by the mountains
those clouds join the evaporation of the rain forests typically found on
that side in the afternoons. Rain clouds then move over the tops of the
mountains. They arrive on the west sides in some places still full of rain
and at others they are reduced to puffy clouds. This fabulous mist was
unique to any other place I had visited in Hawaii.
.
.
Here they can be seen after arriving at
the top of the tree line where we were positioned. At this point they were
fingering down through the tops of the trees and about to fill the landscape
with their surreal presence. In the background is the four wheel drive
Jeep we used to reach this magnificent height. During the rainy winter
months it would be very dangerous to attempt the drive up as the roads
showed signs of deep washed out ruts on the slippery clay they were made
of. The road was narrow, steep and for the most part there were no places
to turn around being they followed the side of the sheer cliffs. These
roads are not recommended to anyone inexperienced with four wheeling, even
in the summer, as the occasional rain storm could make them suddenly impassable.
EVEN RESCUES COULD BE PROHIBITED BY THE NATURE OF THIS PASSAGE! Most visitors
arrive after a quite lengthy and strenuous hike. The area we are parked
in is perfect for camping. This is a site we are planning a summer excursion
to in the near future for Self-Discovery, Healing and Transformation groups.

On the other side of the island, this beautiful
pristine bay awaits the most adventurous of travelers. (That's Us!)
.
.
And that's me again, at the bottom, resting
against one of the posts used as a channel marker for the canoes and other
small fishing boats which come in and out of this bay. There was one small
cluster of primitive houses on the far side of the bay and the (lucky)
people who reside there, obviously live very similarly to their ancient
ancestors. There is a waterfall hike which we had planned to take beginning
at the bottom of the bay but it was closed due to recent flooding. Flash
floods are a very serious, deadly and frequent condition adventure travelers
must be aware of and respect while visiting in Hawaii.
.
There is so much more to show and tell about
this and the other Hawaiian islands. I hope you will check back sometime
to discover more as my pages grow by being filled with such photos.
