About These Logos
The Headliner On This Page
It only took a few months for
BACKWASH to become popular on Oahu. As they began to perform at clubs and
major parties, they wanted to establish their name in a way that would
be displayed with conformity in order to establish recognition with their
fans. Flyers are THE main form of advertisement for such venues and this
unexpectedly became an important issue. George Andrews, a founding member
and the bass player at the time, came up with this jagged computer generated
design in 1993 to meet the demands of their quickly growing schedule of
events.
*
I think it is a very appropriate
rendition of their name because especially in the beginning, BACKWASH had
a very hard-core punk sound which featured a raw almost nerve shattering
exuberance. They left fans feeling as ecstatically jagged as the edges
of the logo. Stickers and a banner were made and the latter now hangs proudly
in their studio and sometimes still appears at their shows.
The Second Logo
As the demand for their music
grew by leaps and bounds it became obvious something more creative would
be in order. Phil, drew this, more or less as a design that pleased him.
It was adopted by the band to be their official logo in 1994. I think it
is a cool symbol for them because the two arms are representative of waves
forming up before they crash together, the sun is shining above and the
screw makes me think of getting sucked under water in a downward spiral
as might actually happen if you were to be caught in the middle of a backwash.
This began to appear along with their jagged title on flyers and banners
and stickers were made. It appeared on the first release of their album.
It still occasionally appears on flyers and could crop up anywhere at anytime
they perform ...... like ...... somewhere on Boogie D's body. Can you guess
where???

The Third and Current Logo and Trademark
As the members of BACKWASH
became more serious about their career as a band, their logo became an
important issue for business purposes. They were preparing to begin their
first album, and acquired an agent. Their symbol would now be needed on
business cards, letterheads, T-shirts and stickers. Collectively, they
agreed their logo should be something more obviously symbolic of their
name.

No one can argue that while
BACKWASH performs many songs with subjects of a very serious nature, their
performances and personalities also include a good deal of humor. It is
from this angle that the new logo was born. On the shorelines of Hawaii,
it is common as it is on shorelines throughout the world, to find many
different black and yellow warning signs which depict dangerous high waves,
fast currents and unsafe swimming conditions. No such official sign exists
for the condition of backwash. The idea to create one which would similarly
depict the condition and what would inevitably happen to a surfer caught
up in it, was unanimously agreed upon to be the new symbol.

In Boogie D's words...
"We
did all agree to change our logo and decided on Crombie's idea, the beach
sign look. We first drew it together after a practice at Fatty's and then
later made it with construction paper at Rocky's ...... cutting out the
waves and boarders and putting them into the right spots. It was later
given to a computer specialist who put some finishing touches on it and
made it ready for our business cards. If it wasn't for Cathy, our agent
at the time, we wouldn't have designed that logo. We were all trying to
win her approval for a more professional look but we were stoked on the
outcome and it has become the definitive symbol for us."
*
When Phil and I later took
the disk to a graphic artist in residence at a sticker manufacturer, the
design was fine tuned and the lettering and borders were added. The overall
design as it appears here, on their stickers and currently on their T-shirts
was the result. So even I (as the official band mom) joined in this group
effort and had a little input into it's final appearance.

The Fourth Logo For Boogie D Productions
According to Boogie D....
This is the new logo for BOOGIE
D PRODUCTIONS, the bands official label, under which the band has been
conducting additional business. It's on the first album and will be on
the next one. Luke Pinolet, who is the brother of Mikah, a very close &
cool friend of the band's, drew it for Boogie and Crombie created the computer
graphic which appears here. Boogie D Productions is an outside business
run by Backwash. Although it's named after Dave's nickname, Boogie D, it's
the whole band's interest.
