A young gun who burst onto the racing scene in the early 1980's, Max's career embodies promise unfulfilled. A British-born lad, Max moved to L.A. as a toddler but maintained ties with the European racing scene. After dabbling in minor formula racing with noteworthy flashes of brilliance, Ferrari hired him as a stand-in driver for its Formula 1 team in 1982 after the tragic death of Gilles Villeneuve. Max in fact raced for the Scuderia only once - the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, which he won in dramatic style. This led to a ride in the second Fittipaldi car for the remainder of the season, where he did as well as the team's tiny budget permitted.
When the team folded, Max did not remain unemployed for long, as Hexagon quickly scooped him up for the number two seat on his new DMC team. Max won two races for DMC but generally fell short of Hexagon's own performances. An aborted Indycar career with the team's stateside effort also dealt him a blow, including failing to qualify for the Indy 500 twice in three tries. Max left the team after 1987, and his status took a nosedive as he languished with backmarker teams such as Zakspeed and Fondmetal. He currently drives the single entry for the French Larrousse team.
Sweet and charming, Max nonetheless feels somewhat disillusioned over how his career has leveled off in recent years. With so many of his F1 contemporaries making the jump to Indycar, he fantasizes about a return to competitiveness, but car owners are not exactly knocking on his door yet.
Max enjoys playing bocce, a habit he picked up from PPI. He fantasizes about playing against the Pope.
