Alt.Culture.Hawaii

was created by the joint efforts of (in alphabetical order) Clay Bobisud, Eric Ghost, Christopher Payne, and Garison Piatt. It grew out of a pressing need to have a place to openly discuss Hawaiian music and related topics. Before they knew it, the concept had expanded, and a group was needed in which EVERYTHING about Hawai'i could be discussed. The HTML version of the FAQ was domiciled at Chris' account at Seattle Pacific University, but he seems to have disappeared...?

In due course, many people showed up, and started dumping alot of garbage into the group, which people who wanted to talk about Hawai'i didn't feel like reading. And so, two ladies decided to try to create a new group that would be moderated, so that all the junk would be kept out. They were Karen Lofstrom, and Sharon Westfall.

They were successful, and with alot of help from Chris Payne writing the moderation software, plus five volunteers who perform the moderation, the result was Soc.Culture.Hawaii.

A place for the discussion of all sorts of issues related to Hawaiian music and artists.

Hawaii-regional newsgroups

These newsgroups have a regional distribution, which means that if you are outside of Hawaii, and you CAN see them, then this is ... unusual. But if you were resident in the state of Hawai'i, you could read:

Hawaii.Ads.Forsale: Announcements of articles/services offered for sale.
Hawaii.Ads.Misc: I haven't the slightest idea....
Hawaii.Ads.Wanted: Announcements of articles/services wanted to buy.
Hawaii.Announce: Seems to be alot of people announcing their web-pages, events, etc.
Hawaii.Binaries.Pictures Hawaii.Binaries.Pictures.D: This would appear to be a good spot to part miscellaneous pictures relating to Hawaii that one has a pressing need to post. What is with the other group with the ".d"?
Hawaii.Config: The local equivalent of "News.Groups". Discussions relating to the possible formation, or changes, to the Hawaii.* heirarchy.
Hawaii.Education: John Hong's brainchild. Dedicated to issues relating to discussing all levels of education in the state of Hawai'i.
Hawaii.Gardening: Discussions relating to gardening and horticulture in the state of Hawai'i. Green thumbs, black thumbs, and even people featured on "Wanted" posters in Florist shops (Rita Rudner joke) are welcome!
Hawaii.Inet-Providers: A Kinder, Gentler "news.groups" ? Yeah, Right. Discussions relating to the various Internet Service Providers in the state of Hawai'i, which usually translates into major-league flame-wars between the various principles and their supporters arguing over who has the better service. Please put on Asbestos underwear before reading or posting to this group.
Hawaii.Military: Topics relating to the US Armed Forces in the state of Hawai'i, or of interest to members of same.
Hawaii.Misc: ?
Hawaii.Nortle: Started partly in jest (at the suggestion of Neal Oribio) as a way of getting rid of the 'Bot attached to Hawaii.Test, this is a place to just ... be wierd and play. Usually contains a whole bunch of cascades and other really wierd stuff that you would expect from a bunch of people having fun. Unfortunately, lately, a certain doctor has been making house-calls....
Hawaii.Politics: Political discussions related to Hawai'i.
Hawaii.Radio: Discussions relating to the various broadcasters in the state of Hawai'i.
Hawaii.Sports: Discussions relating to Sports in the state of Hawai'i.
Hawaii.Test: A place for sending messages to check out propagation delays 'n stuff. Lately, however, some very strange goings-on have been observed. Beware the 'Bot! (an automatic process running in Iowa that sends off an eMail response to the author of each message seen)
