  GC SoundScope

Upon first being introduced to the music of Garnet Crow back in mid-2001 (when I purchased their first album, First Soundscope ~Mizu no nai Hareta Umi e~, on little more than faith and the recommendation of a friend) I was immediately impressed. Here was a band that pretty much represented everything I love about music. Of course, even in their homeland of Japan, Garnet Crow remains a pretty well-kept secret, if one is to judge by CD sales -- proof positive that Talent alone does not sell records. Needless to say, there are few, if any Garnet Crow webpages in the English speaking world. Hopefully this page can be of some help in promoting the music of this underappreciated group. I intend to get more up in the near future, but for now I hope you'll be able to make do with what I've got. Feel free to visit my main page, Ryu's J-Pop Music Station, for more J-Pop translations and info. Ryu, signing out.

Who is Garnet Crow, and Why should you care?

As implied by the sidebar, Garnet Crow is a four-piece group. Nakamura Yuri is the lead vocalist, and also composes the music for all of Garnet Crow's songs. The enigmatic Azuki Nana plays keyboards, and also serves as the group's lyricist. Furui Hirohito also handles keyboards, and is responsible for song arrangement. Lastly, Okamoto Hitoshi is the group's guitarist. Though employing a style firmly rooted in J-Pop -- the ecclectic fusion pop style that defies standard western musical categorization -- their entire musical approach, from their laid-back promotional tactics to their light, airy musical arrangement makes them the anti-AVEX: a group that traffics in sublime understatement, rather than in-your-face gaudiness. Add to that the melodically deep, resonant vocals of Nakamura Yuri, and the equally deep and resonant quality of Azuki Nana's lyrics, and you have a unique sound that is sure to appeal to those seeking respite from the bombardment of image-pop that currently rules the music scene.
