Line Test for 56k Modems
If you're not getting the performance you expect from your new, highspeed
modem, you should try the following Line Test, courtesy of
3Com / US Robotics:
- Use some terminal emulation software to dial 1-847-262-6000
- When prompted whether your system supports graphics, just press [Enter]
- When prompted for your name, enter:
Line Test
The results of the test can yield valuable information about the quality
of the line, but are somewhat couched in "Marketeze", so beware of words
like, "But" or "However".
Chameleon
Beware the dreaded "Could not open serial port", as this usually refers to a User
name or password problem.
Macintosh Modem Init Strings
Some reports that removing or disabling the HP Print Monitor may
fix some modem-communications problems.... Just a rumour?
The "Table of Contents" is now in the sidebar below the buttons...

MacOS 8.5 note: Geoport/Express modes require the
Telecom 3.1.3
update in order to function, and it is NOT included on the CD-ROM.
Performa 6400 note: if the serial number ends in a letter, then the internal
modem is a Geoport 288, otherwise it's a
Global Village Platinum.
Also make sure that the "AOL Link" file is removed from the "System Folder",
"Extensions Folder", as it will interfere with FreePPP.
Mac OS 8 Alert!
After installing Mac OS 8, owners of the Express/Geoport modem MUST go to
the Mac OS 8 CD, and into the following folders and run the installer, or the
Geoport modem WILL NOT WORK:

The mac is supposed to ALWAYS use "&d0".

For Flow Control, choose None for the Bronze modems and the PowerPort Mercury in the PowerBook Duo/2xx/5xx. For all others, choose CTS Only.
Note: If you are having a problem with connections using the Silver, Gold, Mercury, or Platinum modems, try adding a %c0 (that's a zero) to the end of the init string. This is often needed when connecting to mainframes and Unix systems.
