Jackie Chan Filmography
The 1990's

1996
Who Am I?
1997
Actor
Chan plays a man who suffers from amnesia and unknown injuries in Africa. The indigenous natives nurse him back to health.

Since Jackie's character can't remember who he is, he stays with the natives and learns their way of life. He also learns how modern man has become enemies against nature. This film sounds like it is a pro-environmental story.

Earlier press releases mention Jackie riding a very active rhinoceros for an action shot. Chan sustains minor injuries from falling off the rhino.

Mr. Nice Guy
1996
Actor
Already premiered in Asia in February 1997, this movie was shot on location in Australia. It should be released in the US this year or some time next year.

A cameraman and a local reporter (Gabrielle Fitzpatrick) sneak in to record a drug deal between the two gangs. They are discovered but the reporter was able to escape with the evidence on video tape. The cameraman was not so fortunate because he was caught and killed in the pursuit. Now the main goal of the bad guys is to get the incriminating video. The reporter is in big trouble with two gangs chasing her all over town. But fortunately she runs into Jackie who is returning from grocery shopping. This time... Jackie is not a cop....better yet... he's a cooking show host... who can kick major butt of course.

This movie is mostly guns, threats, and a whole lot of chasing. Here's a vague description of one scene:

  • 30ft floating inflated gorilla
  • a 15ft wedding cake
  • 16 bikers getting married in a mass wedding ceremony
  • gangsters in hot pursuit of Jackie and the female reporter.

Richard Norton gets to play the bad guy. Samo Hung, who is the director of this film, has a cameo role.

I personally thought this film was only OK and not that great. A few of the stunts are pretty cool and innovative. I liked the fight scene at the construction site. Table saws, cement mixers, and handheld power grinders are some of the ingredients for an exciting action scenario.

I do have one question. Who makes the costuming decision in this film? One of the gangs is even cornier than the "Rumble in the Bronx" gang.

Here is the Hong Kong site for the movie - The Nice Guy.

  • Police Story IV: First Strike
    1996
    Actor
Its the latest Police Story episode with Jackie kicking it again. This time he works with the CIA in addition to Hong Kong's CID. Someone has a nuclear warhead for sale and Jackie has to help them get it back. The story is routine but some of the action is good.

    Watch for these three scenes:

  • the underwater fight scene with real and fake shark
  • the ladder/table/chairs battle
  • the snowboard/snowmobile/helicopter scene

The action is good or at least decent. Like most of his modern movies, JC learns a new skill and uses it in his latest film. This time its snowboarding.

Some fans have said that this movie was ok but not as good as the other Police Story titles. I personally liked it for the action stunts and martial arts productions.....but did I hope for a little more.

There is another title for this film: Jackie Chan's First Strike

  • 1995
    Thunderbolt
    1995
    Actor
The story is about a mechanic/race car driver (Jackie) who is helping the police capture an international criminal who also happens to be an elusive and highly-skilled race car driver.

Great action. The race car finale was not done well. But I did like the Pachinko Parlor fight scene and the hydraulic crane and shipment container stunt scene. Worth seeing overall.

There is another title for this film: Dead Heat

    Rumble in the Bronx
    1995
    Actor
Jackie plays a visiting Hong Kong cop (which is not mentioned in the American version) who comes to the US to help out Uncle Bill. His uncle is selling a grocery store located in the middle of Bronx, New York, USA. Jackie runs into the local street gang and organized crime mobsters.

Many JC fans felt this movie is an OK movie after seeing its first premiere in 1995. They felt the ending was very anticlimatic for an action-packed movie. My sentiments sways to this opinion too although the acrobatic battles were superb.

Corny story with weak ending in my estimation. But what can you do when you break an ankle before finishing the end of a film? Make the finale a wacky one. Great stunts overall. So if you like this movie then you will like his 'better' movies. If you can....watch the original uncut version of this movie in Cantonese with English subtitles.

One more thing, the English dubbing sucks big time. Many of you may not know but the guy who played Uncle Bill can speak good English in real life. But who hired the cartoon-character-voice-dubber??

There is another title for this film: Red Bronx

    1994
    Drunken Master II
    1994
    Co-Director and Actor
Great martial arts movie. The story is about a famous Chinese folk hero named Wong Fei Hung who discovers a smuggler's plot to export the treasures of China. The comedy in this film is done very well.

If you don't know the background of Wong Fei Hung then know at least this part, he can drink alcohol and do battle with a style of Kung Fu called "Drunken Boxing". His father has made him promise not to drink alcohol because Drunken Boxing is very deadly and it has ended in tragedy in the past.

There is a whole lot of fighting in this flick and here my two favorite fights:
    1) The battle between General Fu (Lau Kar-leung - director) and Wong Fei Hung (Jackie Chan). Jackie and the General duke it out with sword versus spear.
    2) The other battle is with Jackie and the General together versus several dozen crazy guys with hatchets.

Go see it. By the way, this movie doesn't seem directly related to the first Drunken Master movie but some of the story characters are the same

Only in Hong Kong can you find a old director who can mix it up with the likes of Jackie Chan.

    1993
    Crime Story
    1993
    Actor
Great drama/action movie directed by Kirk Wong. This one has no comedy in it which is a rare occasion for a Jackie Chan film but it works well.

The story is very good and it has a political message about the kidnapping problem in parts of Asia. The action is still there although there is less of it when you compare it to "Drunken Master" or "Supercop".

JC won Taiwan's prestigious Golden Horse Best Actor award for his role.

There is another title for this film: Police Dragon

    Project S
    1993
    Actor
Jackie is only in a short cameo in this movie. But the movie is pretty good anyway. Its a love/action story starring a female cop (Michelle Yeoh) from China who is in love with another cop (Yu Rong-guang). Yu Rong-guang's character leaves China to find his fortune in Hong Kong but ends up as the head of an elite gang there.

Note that this is not your ordinary cop love story. Michelle, who looks petite and all that, can rock the house as she takes on the criminals by firearm and by fist.

Oh yeah....Jackie's cameo is funny. Red is definitely his color. Hehehe.

    City Hunter
    1993
    Actor
This movie is adapted from the Japanese comic of the the same name. Jackie plays Ryu Saeba, a personal investigator, who ends up on a ship captured by terrorist.

Very corny humor in this film. Some good fight scenes and a lot of action. This one of two movies where you get to see Jackie ride a skateboard. Judging from the responses other hardcore JC fans...you will either like this movie or hate it.

Watch the hammy "Streetfighter" battle against the UK martial artist Gary Daniels. Also don't miss the big finale fight against the main baddie - Mr. MacDonald played by Karate expert Richard Norton.

    1992
    Twin Dragons
    1992
    Actor
A twin-separated-at-birth story. Just think of two Jackies with opposite lifestyles. One of the twins is a car mechanic while the other is an accomplished concert pianist and conductor. But only one twin can fight well.

There is a great fight scene in the Mitsubishi car testing factory.

This movie was made to raise money for the Director's Guild of Hong Kong. There are many popular Hong Kong celebrities that make cameo appearances. Even John Woo (director of "Hard Target" and "Broken Arrow") shows up. Let's see if you can point him out... that is... if you know what he looks like.

With all that said....I think the movie is ok but it doesn't rate as high as JC's other recent movies.

    Police Story 3: Super Cop
    1992
    Producer, Actor
Jackie is back as the Hong Kong cop who takes a licking but keeps on ticking (Hmmmm...maybe I should say "keeps on KICKING"). Excuse the bad pun. Anyways...this time JC's character, Ka Kui, has teamed up with a policewoman from China and they go undercover to capture a ring of drug smugglers.

Great stunts! Lots of action. A beautiful and tough female co-star (Michelle Yeoh) who is just as radical as Jackie. She's the same woman who starred in "Project S" listed above. Supercop is a definite "must see"!

    1991
    Actress
    (aka Center Stage)
    1991
    Producer

Note that Jackie is only the producer of this film.

This is a biographical drama about Ruan Ling-Yu who was a Chinese actress in the silent film era. Maggie Cheung, who is popularly known for playing the girlfriend role to Jackie Chan's Police Story series, does a great performance of Ruan. So good that she earns several awards such as Taiwan's Golden Horse Award, the Hong Kong Film Festival's Best Actress award, and the also an award from the Berlin Film Festival (Gold or Silver Berlin Bear...I presume).

As mentioned above, Maggie was a former Ms. Hong Kong contestant.

    Island On Fire
    1991
    Actor
Jackie is in it but not that much or anything significant. According to Jackie's interviews, this movie was a favor for a good friend -- Jimmy Wang Yu. Jackie has actually called it "a rubbish film". I agree... but its still belongs in the filmography list. :^/

I saw it but I will have to come back to this one later.

The Armour of God II:Operation Condor
    1991
    Director, Screenwriter, Actor

Jackie is back in this "Raiders of the Lost Ark" type of role. With three female co-stars at his side, he makes his way into an underground fortress containing a big cache of gold hidden by the Nazis from World War II. The difficult part of this mission is contending with a bunch of treasure-seeking mercenaries who are nearby.

Great stunts. Good movie with a lot of action. Most JC fans rate this higher than the first Armour of God film.
