Jackie Chan Filmography
1980's

1989
Miracles
1989
Director, Screenwriter, Actor

The story is about an innocent stranger who 'accidently' becomes the new boss of the local gangster mob. The story is set in the 1930's... I think. Miracles is loosely based on Frank Capra's Lady for a Day.

The production for this film is pretty extravagant compared to other JC films. In fact, there is a lot of plot in this movie. But the more plot there is then the less action you get. Some JC fans didn't like that. Hard to please everybody.

Action was very good although there may be less of it overall. Watch for the rope factory fight scene which I think is very well choreographed.

There is another title for this film: Mr. Canton and Lady Rose

1988
Police Story II
1988
Director, Screenwriter, Actor
The story is about continuing saga of a tough-as-nails Hong Kong cop who runs into big trouble and this time he faces a bunch of mad bombers. Maggie Cheung plays his damsel-in-distress girlfriend. Of course Jackie's job is always messing up his relationship... again.

Besides the excellent fight scenes, there is a lot of the action and tense drama.

Good story. Don't miss the big fight in the explosives factory. Remember those little "snap-n-pop" noisemakers? Well you're going to see a lot more of them here. Go see it....and all the Police Story films too. What are you waiting for? :)

Dragons Forever
1988
Production Supervisor, Actor
Jackie Chan is a major buttkicker. But in this movie you get Jackie plus two more Chinese guys who happen to know some butt-whopping Kung Fu. All three guys eventually face off against drug-dealing baddies.

Some people feel this is one of Jackie's best movie...in the modern martial arts movie genre. The two co-stars, Yuen Biao and Samo Hung, add a lot to the action scenes because they were trained in the same Chinese opera school as Jackie. There is a great climatic fight scene between JC and a former undefeated world kickboxing champion Benny "The Jet" Urquiduez.

A definite must see if you want to see an awesome martial arts flick from Hong Kong. It would be a travesty if the American movie companies (i.e. Newline, Miramax) don't pick up this title among the rest of the other titles they have chosen. Come on guys...buy the rights to this film already. Hurry up...

1987
Rouge
1987
Producer

Note that Jackie is only the producer for this film. Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui star in this sullen love story. Anita is the woman who played the grocery store owner in Rumble in the Bronx.

Its not action or martial arts but its worth watching especially if you are open to seeing films made from a non-Hollywood source.

Project A II
1987
Director, Actor
The pirates of the first Project A movie come back to take revenge on the local Chinese Coast Guard officer played by Jackie. In the first episode, Jackie he killed their boss and blew up their hideout. Jackie gets in trouble with his superiors again. Having several crazy pirates in civilian clothing chasing him around town doesn't make the situation easier.

If the pirates weren't enough, Jackie also has to contend with several tough criminals who are in town. Although Jackie has special authority over the local police precinct, he can't get them to help because they are too scared. You really can't blame them because these criminals are mean and ruthless.

Don't miss the chili pepper scene. Its got to be one of the best "stunts" that Jackie has done so far. But my favorite stunt is the finale with the falling-wall.

1986
The Armour of God
1986
Director, Co-writer, Actor
This time Jackie's role is a mixture of James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Buster Keaton. Jackie goes on a mission to rescue a former lover who is held captive by evil monks. The kidnappers demand the trade of the "armour of God" for her release.

Don't miss the battle between Jackie and the butt-kicking, leather-clad, high-heel-wearing, Amazon women. There's four of them too... count em... FOUR. And I thought Sigorney Weaver was tough. Hey did I ever tell you I saw her in person at Long Drugs? She is one tall lady.

Many fans either liked this movie or they were indifferent to it. The story was not up to par in my opinion but its fun to watch nevertheless. There are some wild stunts in this one too.

Police Story
1986
Director, Co-writer, Actor
First film in Police Story series (4 of them at this date). Jackie is a modern-day Hong Kong cop who faces off against the local organized crime boss.

Talk about wild stunts. Don't even think about missing the final shopping mall stunts and fight scene. Oh yeah... the hanging-on-to-a-moving-bus-with-only-an-umbrella was not a shabby stunt either.

This movie is Jackie's pick for his favorite of all of the films he made so far. According to him, he likes it the most because it became successful in spite of other people's negative comments.

There is another title for this film: Police Force

1985
First Mission
1985
Actor
A serious movie about a man who is the main caregiver of his mentally-retarded brother (Samo Hung). This is not some pumped up Hollywood story like Rain Man where the retarded person is an idiot-savant who can scam Las Vegas dealers. The "handicap" brother is only a emotional burden to Jackie who loves him but has a difficult time caring for him and pursuing his career.

This is probably one of the few serious Jackie Chan movies where he doesn't rely on his great physical feats and finesse. Well at least not much.

For those of you who don't know...Samo is an accomplished martial arts/action actor and director in the same vein as Jackie. He may appear immobile because of his chubby stature but the man can move with the best of them and I mean "the best". Samo was the guy who fought Bruce Lee in a sparring match in the beginning of Enter the Dragon movie.

There is another title for this film: Heart of a Dragon

Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Stars
1985
Actor
Seen it but I forgot the storyline. There are a couple movies that have the "twinkle twinkle" comedy group so I have a fuzzy memory of which one is which. Will redo this comment later when I get more info.

Oh yeah..."hammy" is the key word with regards to the humor.

The Protector
1985
Actor
Jackie's previous attempt at breaking into the US mainstream market. Danny Aiello costars as Jackie's partner. The action is lacking in comparison to Jackie's Hong Kong movies. I hear that Jackie was not allowed to bring his stunt team to work in this movie. Why? Don't know but it was a very bad decision if its true.

The only part I liked was the fight scene against the American Karate full-contact champion Bill "Superfoot" Wallace. The actual fight was good but I think it could have been done a lot better knowing the skills of both martial artists.

My Lucky Stars
1985
Actor

See comment on Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

If I'm not mistaken there is one very cool fight between a female Hong Kong cop and a female Japanese fighter/bodybuilder. I haven't seen any comparable 'chick fight' (excuse the politically incorrect term) in any American movie yet.

1984
Wheels On Meals
1984
Actor
A corny storyline similar to Jackie's later Armor of God films. Its the old save-the-damsel-in-distress stuck-in-some-castle way-up-in-the-mountains.

This movie has a lot of martial arts fights. The humor is ok. Interesting to see how many people in Spain that can speak fluent Chinese. Oh yeah... Jackie Chan is probably the only action star who can skateboard. I bet if he wanted to... he could do a mean "ollie" on any half-pipe setup.

Jackie costars with two of his classmates who trained at the same Chinese opera school. This is where they learned all that cool acrobatic fighting styles. The chubby guy is Samo Hung who is fast and agile dude but he doesn't do as many high-flying acrobatics as the skinnier guy - Yuen Biao.

There are two American professional kickboxers, Benny "The Jet" Urquidez and Keith Vitali, who play villains in this movie. Both are excellent fighters.

Cannonball Run II
1984
Actor

Jackie returns as the Japanese race car driver.

Hated all of the Cannonball Run movies. Thought they were crap back then and still think they are crap now.

Watch it at your own risk.

1983
Project A
1983
Co-director, Co-writer, Actor
Jackie Chan plays a Coast Guard sargeant who's current assignment involves fighting pirates. Yuen Biao is the local police officer and Samo Hung is the small-time thief who's trying to make the big score.

Note that the movie takes place in/near China. The costumes in this movie may seem funky for American audiences who have never seen Asian people in 'colonial' type clothes. I don't know the accurate time period though so I can't say much more about it.

With all the internal conflicts with the local militia, Jackie and Yuen Biao set out to deal with the pirates who have overrun the nearby seas and terrorized its inhabitants. Samo ends up helping them although his original intent was to get rich by stealing from the pirates.

Good action. Good fighting. There is a couple great stunts and action scenes that are typically shown on Jackie Chan interviews. Don't miss the bicycle chase sequence. Lots of Buster-Keatonesque comedy. Also check out the clock-tower stunt which will remind you of the clock-tower hanging scene from Harold Lloyd's "Safety Last" film. I think JC surpasses their stunts by doing more complicated and dangerous versions.

A few diehard JC fans have lukewarm responses on this title. The "Project A II" is even better.

Winners & Sinners
1983
Actor
See comment on Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

I do remember a cool rollerskating scenario where Jackie does some decent stuff. This is a little similar to the rollerskating race in Battle Creek Brawl but there are more trick stuff in this film.

I'll write more later.

Fearless Hyena II
1983
Actor
Many fans complained about this movie. It seems that the movie makers used lots of footage from the first movie and the story is either choppy or incomplete. Apparently the studio that owns the film rights tried to cash in on first Fearless Hyena movie's success.

According to many sources, the movie was unfinished so the lifting of scenes from the first movie was used to complete it. What a rip off?!?

A real disappointment in many fans' opinions. Go see the first one and you shouldn't waste your time with this one. With that said....you may feel stupid buying the Fearless Hyena double video pack. Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware)

1982
Dragon Lord
1982
Director, Co-writer, Actor
This is the first film that Jackie started to put bloopers and stunt choreography clips into the closing credits of the movie.

The movie is quite interesting with Jackie playing a couple sports. The first sport is a rugby-like game where you do a lot of tumbling acrobatics while chasing something like a football. The game starts with a climb to the top of a large pyramid shaped bamboo structure which has the 'football'. The bamboo can't hold the weight of all the contestants who are in a frenzy to win. To end the game, you're supposed to possess the ball and put it in a cloth sack before anyone can take it away from you...oh and hitting your opponents is allowed.

The second game is like a mix between soccer and badminton. You use your feet to kick around an industrial-size 'birdie' or 'shuttlecock' as one JC fan put it. You win points by scoring goals in a soccer type net.

OK...now for the plot. Corrupt military men dealing with stolen antique collections. Jackie plays a teenager named Ah Loong (translated Dragon) who has a rival cousin named Cowboy (?). Both like the same girl and they try to win her over before the other one does. Now back to the corrupt dudes, there's a lieutenant who is trying to stop the military thieves but he is not a match for them. While being beat up by the thieves, the lieutenant runs into Dragon and Cowboy. The rest of the story is your job to find out.

1981
Cannonball Run
1981
Actor
Hated the Cannonball Run movies. Watch it at your own risk.

Think about it. A movie with Burt Reynolds and Jackie Chan. Burt is the star and Jackie is playing a bit part. Come on....this movie has got to suck. My opinion of course.

1980
Battle Creek Brawl
1980
Actor
The first JC American movie. Not that great but watchable compared to the other JC American film - The Protector. Your opinion may vary though.

The story is about an Americanized Chinese guy who enters a strong man type of contest. I guess it meant strong in terms of fighting as opposed to weight-lifting strength. Believe me....this summary may seem a lot more interesting than the actual movie. But I will say that this movie has its moments.

Jackie can skate pretty good in this movie but I wonder how much better he would be if he was on a pair of inline skates (i.e. Rollerblades). Hmmm...

The Young Master
1980
Director, Co-writer, Actor

Saw it but need to watch it again. Only remember a good Chinese lion dance competition scene. Good movie though.

I will re-watch this one to add more comments.
