  2. Where's the latest version of the FAQ?
  3. Hardware Issues
    1. Card not detected
      • Try installing the card in a different slot.
      • Try changing the memory address range for the card in Device Manager
      • Make sure the card is well seated in the slot. Most systems require the card to be firmly seated in the PCI slot, but other systems (like mine) may be finicky
      • Try the card in another machine (if you can) to see if the card is working
    2. TV out doesn't work
      • Make sure you've selected TV output in DVD Station.
      • Check your connections, depending how your computer's brackets are, you may not be able to get a firm plug-in for the S-Video or S-Video-to-Composite cable.
      • Make sure your TV is set to Video (or whatever mode accepts composite or S-Video).
      • If you are using the S-Video-to-Composite adapter, make sure that the adapter is plugged directly in to the Hollywood Plus card and there are no other cables in-between. If you need to go extend the cable length, use an RCA (composite) cable connected to the Composite end of the S-Video-to-Composite adapter.
      • If your TV button is missing in DVD Station and you only have the fullscreen button, try this (from Nagui):
        1. Run RegEdit
        2. Go to H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE, SigmaDesigns, REALmagic, Station
        3. Delete the "Board" entry
        4. Close RegEdit
        5. Run DVD Station
    3. Why are there 7 pins on the S-Video?
      • S-Video uses only 4 pins, but the Hollywood Plus's S-Video jack has 7 pins (holes, actually).
      • Two of the extra pins are used for Composite out (a normal S-Video cable doesn't have these pins). The other pin is currently not used but may be used in the future.
      • Here is the connector pin layout, from a post by Alain on the Sigma Designs newsgroup:

    4. Will the Hollywood Plus support DTS?
      • DTS support is available in v1.8 of the software and beyond, but you still need an external DTS decoder in order to hear the sound.
    5. Where can I get the S-Video to composite convertor cable?
      • If you didn't get one with your card, it's not required, but it might be worth a try to ask your reseller. Maybe they just forgot it?
      • In the US, you can call the Sigma Designs spare parts line at (800) 494-8848 to order one
      • Call Sigma Designs Tech Support at (970) 339-7120 and ask them for the cable (don't forget to tell them which board you have)
      • Note that this is not a standard part - you can't go to the local computer store and get it.
    6. Known DVD-ROM problems
      • Toshiba M1202 (3rd gen) DVD-ROM may need an updated firmware. If your drive doesn't work right (or doesn't work right with your Hollywood Plus - like it doesn't play some discs right, etc), see if you can return/exchange it.
Some nice person (P Hawkins) on Tripod put up the firmware. Before you download, make sure you have read my Disclaimer. Keep in mind that if the update somehow fails, your drive may be DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR and will need to be sent in to Toshiba for fixing. Good luck! Download SD-M1202 firmware.
      • Sony DDU220E DVD-ROM may have some problems with layer changes. There may be lockups or pauses in the "middle" of movies. Try checking for updated drivers if you have problems. Check Sony's driver page
      • If you have a different drive, check this firmware upgrade page for firmware updates for many drives.
    7. Is the pass-through cable required?
      • Starting with v1.5 of the drivers, the card will work without the pass-through cable, but you won't be able to view movies on your computer monitor. It checks for the presence of the pass-through at boot-time, so if you connect or disconnect the cable you should reboot before playing anything.
      • The Hollywood Plus will not work in "reverse pass-through" mode.
      • If you want to have your Hollywood Plus output on a separate monitor from your normal VGA (and thus avoid the possible signal degradation of the pass-through), here's a way to do it:
        1. Create this cable:
          	VGA Monitor VGA output
          	  Pin Pin
          	   1---------Red--------------------------------1
          	   2---------Green------------------------------2
          	   3---------Blue-------------------------------3
          	   5---------GND--------------------------------5
          	   6---------GND--------------------------------6
          	   7---------GND--------------------------------7
          	   8---------GND--------------------------------8
          	   10--------GND-----------------o---GND--------10
          	   13--------Hsync------------o--|---Hsync------13
          	   14--------Vsync---------o--|--|---Vsync------14
          	                           | | |
          	                           | | |
          	                           | | | H+ input
          	                           | | | (9pinDIN)
          	                           | | ----GND--------2
          	                           | -------Hsync------6
          	                           ----------Vsync------5

        2. Connect the monitor you want to show movies on to this "adapter."
        3. Connect your regular VGA monitor to your VGA card.
        4. Now, set the R, G, and B values in the Advanced color settings of the H+ to 255. When you open DVD Station, your main monitor will show an empty window, and the playback will appear on the dedicated monitor. Maximize the playback window by double-clicking on the empty video window.
      • Okay, a lot of people have been asking me where they can get this cable. Sorry, I don't know of anyone who makes this cable - if you do make this cable, please tell me and I'll list you here.
For those of you who want to assemble this cable and can't find the parts... Search Digi-key (or your favorite electronics parts supply store) for the following:
        • 9-pin male DIN to plug in to H+ VGA In - Connectors, Circular, Mini-DIN - you want a male 9-pin Mini-DIN connector.
        • 15-pin HD male VGA connector - Connectors, Connectors, D-Sub, High Density - you want a male 15-pin High Density D-Sub to connector to your VGA card and you also want a female connector of the same type.
Now, to make the "adapter" cable...
        1. The "VGA output" side of the diagram above corresponds to the male VGA connector.
        2. The "VGA monitor" side of the diagram above corresponds to the female VGA connector.
        3. Wire all necessary pins together on the two VGA connectors - I suggest pre-making your wires all to the same length to minimize signal degradation.
        4. Connect pin 10 on the male VGA connector to pin 2 of the 9-pin mini-DIN connector.
        5. Connect pin 13 on the male VGA connector to pin 6 of the 9-pin mini-DIN connector.
        6. Connect pin 14 on the male VGA connector to pin 5 of the 9-pin mini-DIN connector.
        7. You're done! Test your connections, hook it up, and don't forget to set the appropriate settings in DVD Station.
    8. Sound output is low
      • The audio ouput jack on the Hollywood Plus is unamplified. Connect it to your stereo or the Line In on your soundcard.
      • Alternatively, use the digital output of the Hollywood Plus, if you can. The digital output is better anyway. If you're connecting to a SB Live card (or another card which doesn't decode Dolby AC-3) via the S/PDIF connection, make sure you turn on the PCM mode for audio in DVD Station.
    9. What is the pinout for the pass-through cable?
      • Here is the pinout for the 9-pin VGA In on the Hollywood Plus from a post by Alain:
Note: SDA and SCL signals are not required to get the mpeg boards to
work, it is only to keep the Plug&Play compatibility for the monitors if
        they support this feature.

         9:SCL (from pin15 of DB15)

    10. Where can I get the VGA pass-through cable?
      • If you didn't get one with your card, ask your reseller for it
      • If that doesn't work, consult Sigma Designs' site. They have a Fulfillment/Supplies order line on their Support Page
    11. Vendors selling cards without cables
      • If you didn't get VGA pass-through cable with your Hollywood Plus, ask your vendor for it - maybe they forgot? You'll still be able to use the TV-out as long as you're running v1.5 of the driver or later.
      • If you didn't get a SVideo-to-Composite adapter with your Hollywood Plus, it'll still work... It's not required, but you won't be able to connect a composite output to your Hollywood+ without it. You can try asking your vendor for it. Otherwise, see the Where can I get the S-Video to composite convertor cable? section for where to call to order one.
      • Here is a list of vendors who aren't providing one or both cables (I'm not saying NOT to buy from them, just that if you do, you better make sure you get the cables you need):
        1. Centrix International (http://www.centrix-intl.com/)
No VGA Pass-through, No SVideo-to-Composite cable, No Software.
        2. RAM Computers in Manchester, United Kingdom
          No SVideo-to-Composite cable.
Note: RAM says they don't get the Composite adapter from whomever they get their cards from.
    12. Sound output sounds compressed
      • Note: "compression" in this item is meant in terms of audio engineering-type dB compression, referred to as dB compression hereafter. You can read an explanation of dB compression at Harmony Central's Effects Explained: Compression.
      • Some users have reported that the H+'s audio output (at least the analog) sounds dB compressed. Essentially this would show up as loud sounds being softer than they should.
      • (Info from Alain):
There is nothing special done on the audio, except for the volume control which is done in software and may alter a little the sound. The optimum sound is when the volume is set to maximum (without any sw attenuation) and this corresponds to a line level output.
The stereo dac on board and the analog components passed Dolby standard, we have a (@-3dB) bandwith from 20Hz to 22kHz. Frequency response, crosstalk..everything meets Dolby, but it may not perform as well as an expensive Hi-fi amplifier.

When we listen to the digital PCM output (which is exactly the same audio decoded stream that goes to the Dac for analog output) by sending our SPDIF signal to an external AC3 decoder, its seems to have more clarity than our direct analog output.

So if people want high quality sound (even for 2 channels), I would recommend an external SPDIF decoder (that is 2 or 3 times the price of a H+, so it may justify a better sound) and this may be worth it[.]

This information suggests that we should all have our volume level set to maximum in DVD Station.
      • Would anyone like to comment? Send me mail at bhiga@lava.net.
I'd especially like to hear from people who have used other DVD decoder Cards or digital as well as analog connections.
    13. Can I use Hollywood Plus to display the desktop?
      • No, since H+ simply receives the VGA signal from your VGA card and replaces the "key area" with the DVD image, you can't use it to display the Windows desktop or use it as a secondary VGA card. It wasn't designed to do this.
  4. Software Issues
    1. When will the next release of the drivers be available?
      • v1.6.2 is the latest Win9x driver. v1.7 is the latest NT driver. Please refer to Sigma Designs website for more.
    2. DVD Station won't install
      • Try the following procedure:
        1. Uninstall DVD Station
        2. Delete the Hollywood+ INFs from Inf\Other in the Windows directory (You can open them in Notepad and look through to see if it's a Hollywood+ related thing or not)
        3. Remove the Sigma Designs REALMagic CODECs from the Multimedia control panel
        4. Reboot and let Windows redetect the card and reinstall its drivers.
        5. After the drivers are installed, try playing a MPEG file from Windows Media Player. If it doesn't play from there, the card is not being recognized (refer to Hardware Issues).
        6. Reinstall DVD Station.
    3. MMSYSTEM275 when trying to play DVDs
      • (IDE DVD-ROM drives, Windows 95) Download and install the updated ESDI_605.PDR from Microsoft (it's called "Removable IDE Driver Update" or something like that).
      • (IDE DVD-ROM drives) Try moving your drive from Slave to Master or vice versa. Also try moving it from the Primary to Secondary IDE channel or vice versa.
      • If it only happens on certain DVDs, try disabling UDF filesystem support by running MSCONFIG or try this (from Sigma Designs site):
If you are are trying to view certain DVD movies such as "The World Is Not Enough" and receive a "file not found" or MMSYSTEM 275 error, please do the following (as proposed by a user and tested by us): Run regedit and rename the entries - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Udfs and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\Udfs by changing "Udfs" to any name like "Abc" and reboot. When you change control set 001, it automatically changes control set 002. When you are done with the movie, rename "Abc" back to "Udfs".
      • Download and install the latest ASPI32 from Adaptec (http://www.adaptec.com/). Note that it will only install if you currently have an Adaptec ASPI layer installed.
      • Download and install Panasonic DVD-ROM drivers even if you don't have a Panasonic DVD-ROM (worked great for my Toshiba SD-M1002!!) If it doesn't work you can uninstall it via the setup program. If you don't want to download my copy, then email tech_support@sdesigns.com and ask them for the ATAPI DVD drivers.
      • See if there is a firmware update for your drive. Check the Known DVD-ROM Problems section for more information.
      • If you're running Zone Selector, make sure you're using the latest version.
      • If you're getting this error playing a MPEG file, check that the pathname or filename is not too long - try moving the file closer to the root directory, and shorten the name of the file.
    4. Are there Windows NT drivers?
    5. Are there DirectShow drivers?
      • Sorry, DirectShow support is not planned. (Bummer...)
      • But... one user said...
Actually, it turns out there are already netshow drivers which work with the card -- Pick them up from the netstream 2 driver file. The files with the .ax extension are netshow filters. They seemed to work for me, but I did goofy stuff where I updated my driver with the netstream 2 files, then reupdated my driver with the H+
    6. Can't use fullscreen DOS box while running DVD Station
      • If you are playing a movie on the computer monitor in DVD Station and bring up a full-screen DOS box, upon exit of the DOS box, the display remains blank.
      • Just don't bring up a full-screen DOS box while playing movies. Besides, if you can see the movie playing through the DOS box, something is DEFINITELY wrong! =)
    7. How do I do a clean reinstall of the card and software?
      • (from a post by Nagui)
        1. Remove the devices from Device Manager. (I mean Hollywood Plus and if you have one under OTHERS.)
        2. Delete from the INF\OTHER directory any INF files belonging to Hollywood Plus.
        3. Run REGEDIT and delete the entry "Sigma Designs" from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE- Software.
        4. Reboot and start a clean installation by inserting the first diskette when you get "New Hardware Found" message. Then run SETUP from the second diskette.
      • From Sigma Designs FAX (thanks Jeff Pynnonen)
        1. Run the "Uninstall" utility. (Start, programs, realmagic, uninstall)
If uninstalling 32 bit drivers, and the "Uninstall" utility fails for any reason, uninstall using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
(Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs)
        2. Go to Device Manager.
(Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager)
Remove any references to REALMagic in "Sound, video and games controllers" Also check "Other Devices" or "Other Detected Devices"
The REALMagic card may be listed as a PCI Multimedia Video Device.
        3. If Using the Original Release of Windows 95 (the A or no-letter version):
          Start the "Find" program.
          (Start, Find, Files or Folders)
          Look for the following files
          Named : OEM*.INF
          Look in: C:\windows\inf
If you find any files of the following format:
          oem[some number].inf (OEM0.INF, OEM1.INF, OEM2.INF, etc)
double click on file. If its a RealMagic/Sigma Designs file, DELETE IT.
oemsetup.inf & oemblaster.inf are examples of files NOT TO DELETE.
        4. If USING OSR2 (the OEM, B or C version of WIN95) or WIN98:
Open "c:\windows\inf\other" folder. Often this folder is hidden, you may have to unhide it. If you find any SigmaDesigns or REALMagic files, delete them. If the filename is ambiguous, like msmpeg.inf, double-click on it. If it's a REALMagic file, delete it.
        5. Open the Windows Explorer program
Delete c:\realmagc folder. If Win95/98 won't delete the folder, empty the Recycle Bin, then quit Win95/98 and restart in MS-DOS mode. Delete the realmagc directory with the following DOS command: DELTREE C:\REALMAGC
BE CAREFUL WITH THIS COMMAND. IF YOUR SYNTAX IS NOT EXACT, YOU CAN DELETE MORE THAN THE REALMAGC FOLDER.
        6. Empty the Recylcle Bin.
      • If you get REALLY desperate you can try doing a clean reinstall of Win95 or Win98, but I'd suggest it only as a last resort.
    8. Where can I get drivers for the DVD-ROM that came with my Hollywood Plus 98 bundle?
      • (from John Barnette)
Sigma has release "Hollywood Plus 98", which is bundled with a Hitachi drive. The package comes with no documentation, drivers, etc for the drive, just the stuff for the card.
      • You can get drivers for the Hitachi drive (make sure you have the model number handy!) at http://www.hitachi.com/storage/support/support.html
    9. Is there a crack to play other region's DVDs?
      • DVDs are region protected, which means that players in Region 1 (US/Canada) can't play DVDs from other regions (Japan, Europe, etc). This concept is similar to the region protection on the Sony PlayStation.
The Hollywood Plus software allows you to change the region code of your Hollywood Plus up to 5 times, before the region code can no longer be changed and requires the board to be sent in for resetting. The region code and change counter is stored in EEPROM on the board and retrieved somehow via the software.
      • Here is a list of "region cracks" for the Hollywood Plus. Please click the link to view more information about the crack.
        • Zone Selector
          A software-based crack which doesn't modify your H+!!
Make sure you run Zone Selector FIRST, then choose the region you have your H+ set to, then run DVD Station from the icon on the taskbar.
        • WNASPI32.DLL crack
      • Crack alternatives:
    10. DVD Station won't play
      • Check that the disc you're playing corresponds to the region you have set on your Hollywood Plus.
      • Try changing your display settings - DVD Station needs at least 256 colors, but DVDs will always play in 24 bit (16.7 million colors) regardless of your display color settings.
      • Try reinstalling DVD Station.
      • See if there is a firmware update for your drive. Check the Known DVD-ROM Problems section for more information.
      • Try checking or un-checking DMA in your DVD-ROM's Properties (access through Device Manager).
    11. How can I specify the drive letter of my DVD-ROM when DVD Station starts up?
      • Jeff Pynnonen has uncovered a switch for the Station.exe command line which lets you specify what drive letter DVD Station should use.
        Running
        STATION /d=drive letter without colon
will have DVD Station use the specified drive letter when it starts up. You will probably want to modify your DVD Station shortcut to specify this.
    12. EDSI_506.PDR is Not Installed error
      • Remove the reference to ESDI_506.PDR from the INI.TXT file.
    13. MMSYSTEM266 error
      • If you don't have the VGA pass-through cable attached to your Hollywood Plus or VGA card, attach it. Prior top v1.5 of the software, the Hollywood Plus would not work without the VGA pass-through.
      • Remove the Hollywood Plus and reseat it in a different slot.
      • Perform a clean install of the Hollywood Plus software. See the section titled How do I do a clean reinstall of the card and software?
    14. DVD playback crashes when the machine is accessed from the network
      • If you have a 3Com 3c90x card - try the "unsupported minimum install Etherdisk 4.01b" instead of the full Etherdisk. (Thanks Svein Erling Seldal)
      • If you are using a different network card, try updating drivers or swapping network cards.
      • If all else fails, disconnect the network cable from the machine while playing DVDs.
  5. Playback Issues
    1. Playback is smooth but picture jitters on computer monitor
      • Adjust "Stability" option in Hollywood+ Configuration Border Adjustment
      • For 24 fps movies, set monitor refresh rate to a multiple of 24 Hz if possible. 72 Hz or 96 Hz should give you the best quality.
      • Mike Hart suggests running at 800x600 at 120 Hz - 120 is divisble by both 30 and 24, so it should be good for both 30 fps AND 24 fps movies! Note that not all monitors or video cards support 120 Hz refresh, and you might have to set your resolution lower.
    2. Playback is jerky (stops/slows then goes again)
      • Check to see if the DVD is clean.
      • (IDE hard drive and/or IDE DVD-ROM) Make sure your motherboard supports Bus-Mastering IDE and you are using the latest drivers for your motherboard. http://www.bmdrivers.com/ has a listing of many Bus-Mastering drivers.
      • Check to see there are no IRQ or Memory address conflicts with other devices in your system.
      • First generation DVD-ROM drives have problems with dual-layer discs. Check if your DVD-ROM correctly supports dual-layer discs.
      • See if there is a firmware update for your drive. Check the Known DVD-ROM Problems section for more information.
      • In Windows 98, disable UDF file system by Start|Run|MSconfig|Advanced|Disable UDF file system
      • Mike Hart says: (Note, the problem has been fixed by driver v1.6)
Certain movies' video playback stutters, providing jerky playback, while most other movies work fine. This is also a problem with most movie trailers, but not necessarily the main movie. Example problem movies are Scent of a Woman, Dave, and Starman. I have also noticed that all of these movies and trailers will not play in Dolby Digital 5.1 and default to Dolby Pro Logic. The solution is simple: In the options menu, select PCM playback instead of AC-3 and everything works perfectly. The movies still play in Dolby Pro Logic mode, but the picture quality is much improved, and the jerky playback no longer exists!
    3. Try moving the H+ to a different slot - there might be some weird PCI problem happening.
    4. TV output colors wave or fade
      • Make sure you are not connecting the TV-out through a VCR or other recording device. Color waving and shifting is often due to the MacroVision anti-copying protection.
      • A user suggests...
I can't prove it myself since I don't know own one. But there is a product on the market called the Video Carifier VC3. It should solve the problem of watching DVD's through a VCR, or on a TV/VCR combo. I wrote the reseller and they confirmed it does fix the problem with watching them on the a TV/VCR... it cost about US$30... check http://store.yahoo.com/direct/vidclarvc3.html
    5. TV output is black-and-white only
      • Try driver version 1.50 or later - there were adjustments made to the TV output frequency which should fix this problem.
      • Check the connections to the card
      • Try a different cable if possible
      • Check your TV
    6. TV output quality is poor
      • If possible, use the S-Video output instead of the Composite output of the Hollywood+. S-Video gives superior quality.
      • Adjust the brightness, contract, and color settings while the card is in TV output mode, since the VGA output and TV output settings are separate.
      • Adjust your television's brightness, contrast, and color settings.
    7. Computer monitor output quality is poor
      • Try driver v1.50 or later - a fix was made for certain S3 display chipsets.
      • Adjust the brightness/contrast in the Hollywood+ settings, making sure you're in VGA output mode while adjusting.
      • If you have multiple VGA-passthrough devices (such as 3Dfx cards or other overlay cards) try removing them or changing the order they're chained
      • Change your monitor's Color Temperature setting and/or Video Level setting (if possible)
      • If the monitor is EXTREMELY dark, it may not have 75 ohms impedance at the input. Try a different monitor if possible. For monitors with BNC connectors, you can attach a 75-ohm resistor using a BNC T-connector and a 75-ohm resistor such as those used for BNC ethernet termination.
    8. Can't control DVD playback from TV
      • The TV doesn't have control over the DVD playback - your computer does. Use DVD Station to control DVD playback.
      • You can use a computer remote control with remote mouse functionality to control DVD station from across the room. I have a Packard Bell FastMedia remote connected to my system that allows me to use the remote control to emulate the mouse and thus control DVD Station from afar (although it's hard to read the computer screen). HOWEVER before you go out and get one of these $10-on-the-web-auctions devices, be warned that only the mouse functionality and master volume control work. The rest of the buttons on the remote won't do anything unless you have a Packard Bell TV or Packard Bell FM Radio card. I'm trying to figure out a way to get the remote's buttons programmable, so go look at the UnOfficial Packard Bell Fast Media Remote FAQ
      • Dino Sangiuliano suggests the Remote Mouse from X-10.
I have found a wireless remote control that works perfect with DVD Station.
It is the remote mouse from X-10. This remote is so flexible that it will control your whole system including your PC. It will even control X-10 modules to turn the lights on and off and dim. Any function that has a hotkey on DVD Station can be programed. You can even launch DVD Station as soon as you press the DVD button on the remote and the movie starts. It will even shut down the computer by pressing the power button. You would think you had a stand alone DVD player. It comes in two versions one is just the IR remote mouse and the other is called The Big Picture (I have The Big Picture) The Big Picture is an RF remote that can be used in any room and comes with a vga to tv converter and video sender using 2.4 ghz so it delivers a great picture and stereo sound to any TV in the house you want. You can even browse the web. You can find all the info you need at http://www.x10.com
      • Erwin van den Berg has a neat program called the Remote Selector and says:
There's an undocumented feature in the current version of the Remote Selector: it has remote support for the DVD Station software. This means that you can use 6 different remotes to control the H+.
Erwin's page, Visual Domain, is at http://www.visualdomain.net/. You can get Remote Selector there.
      • Nathan Lindsey came up with another smart solution. He set his Microsoft Sidewinder pad's buttons for use with DVD Station. This should work for other joysticks/pads with programmable buttons as well.
      • Another useful program is IRassistant, found at http://www.antenet.fi/irassistant
      • Sigma Designs now has a remote control for DVDStation. See the Sigma Designs remote contorl page for more info.
    9. No sound on computer
      • Make sure your sound output settings in DVD Station are correct
      • Make sure the sound is not muted in DVD Station
      • Make sure you're playing a segment with sound
      • Check your soundcard's mixer settings
      • If you are connecting via the Hollywood Plus's external output, make sure you are connected to the line-out (1/8" stereo mini-jack) and not the Dolby AC3 S/PDIF (RCA-type) jack.
      • Here are a few sound connection scenarios (these are by far not the only ways):
        1. DVD-ROM internal CD-out -> Hollywood Plus internal CD-in
Hollywood Plus internal CD-out -> Soundcard internal CD-in
Volume is controlled by Soundcard's mixer and DVD Station
        2. DVD-ROM internal CD-out -> Hollywood Plus internal CD-in
Hollywood Plus external line-out -> Soundcard external line-in
Volume is controlled by Soundcard's mixer and DVD Station
        3. DVD-ROM internal CD-out -> Hollywood Plus internal CD-in
          Hollywood Plus internal CD-out -> TV/Video card CD-in
          TV/Video card CD-out -> Soundcard CD-in
Volume is controlled by Soundcard's mixer, DVD Station (for DVDs), TV/Video card (for TV)
      • Davy suggested the following smart hookup:
If the sound level for your DVDs is too low, try the microphone jack - it's usually amplified a lot more than the Line In.
Note that the microphone jack on some soundcards is mono, so if that's the case with your card, it may not be a good idea.
    10. No sound on TV
      • Make sure your sound output settings in DVD Station are correct
      • Make sure you're playing a segment with sound
      • Check your soundcard's mixer settings (if connecting through the soundcard)
      • Make sure the TV and DVD Station are not muted
      • If you are connecting via the Hollywood Plus's external output, make sure you are connected to the line-out (1/8" stereo mini-jack) and not the Dolby AC3 S/PDIF (RCA-type) jack.
      • Connect directly to the Hollywood Plus's external line-out
      • Note that if you're connected to both the external line-out and the internal CD-out on the Hollywood Plus, the signal gets split and thus becomes significantly softer on both ends. You may want to consider changing your connections or using the Dolby S/PDIF output if possible.
    11. TV picture is cut-off
      • Wide screen TV users: Set Preferred display to Wide in DVD Station. When 16:9 light is displayed set your TV to Full. If 16:9 light is not displayed, set Tv to 4:3 or Auto. (from Steve Goldthorpe post on Sigma Designs newsgroup)
      • Non-wide screen TV users: See if you can play with your TV's overscan/underscan settings. Try different playback settings (Wide/Letterbox/Pan and Scan) in DVD Station.
    12. Highlighted menus appear offset
      • If the highlighting on a menu is offset, try changing the display setting between Wide and Letterbox in DVD Station.
      • This has been fixed by driver release v1.50
    13. Animations (not movies) appear jerky
      • This has been fixed by driver release v1.50
      • The problem also could be drive or configuration related.
      • See if there is a firmware update for your drive. Check the Known DVD-ROM Problems section for more information.
    14. PAL output is not smooth
      • This should be fixed by a future software release that implements PAL-m (ver 1.3??)
      • The following is from a post by Alain on the Sigma Designs newsgroup regarding PAL quality:
        1. if the NTSC source is a movie in 24 frames/sec (interpolated to 30fps), then the PAL conversion is good since we don't have to drop frames and we'll make it play at 50 fps (from 24-->50, so no dropping).
        2. if the NTSC source is a 30fps clip, then we have to drop 1 frame out of 6 frames. We are improving this conversion by analysing the motion and the frames to be dropped, and also by removing only 1 field at a time to make it smoother.
        3. in addition to improving the 50Hz output, we'll also add a 60Hz PAL output for TVs that can support it.
      • Many users report PAL output isn't as good as it could/should be since conversion from 24 fps repeats a frame to get 50 Hz. Hopefully this will be improved in the near future.
    15. Does the Hollywood Plus have a 16-bit or 32-bit MPEG driver?
      • The Hollywood Plus has a 32-bit MPEG driver. However, programs can talk to the H+ using MCI, which is a 16-bit interface.
    16. Picture on the monitor is wavy
      • Try Advanced - Adjust Borders in the configuration program
      • Make sure there are no power transformers or other causes of electrical interference nearby.
      • Try different monitor resolutions and refresh rates
    17. DVDs play fine for a while, then everything goes haywire!
      • Check your DVD-ROM - many DVD-ROMs have peculiar problems reading certain types of discs. Toshiba Gen 2 and Gen 3 drives are known to have problems. See if you can get a firmware upgrade for your drive.
      • Try disabling screen savers, applications that run in the background, etc.
      • Feel your computer's case near your Hollywood Plus card. Try running with your case open. If your Hollywood Plus plays fine (or plays longer), you may have a temperature problem. Try adding some cooling fans near your H+ and see if that helps the problem. You can also try moving the card away from other cards (especially video cards and TV cards). Note that overheat may also be a sign of defective components on the card. If you can, try a different card.
      • See if there is a firmware update for your drive. Check the Known DVD-ROM Problems section for more information.
    18. Layer and Chapter Changes mess up AC-3 output
      • Layer and Chapter changes may interrupt the AC-3 sound signal in certain configurations. Anybody have more info?
    19. Known Problem DVDs
      • 2010 - movie hangs after Chapter 5 Sigma is looking in to problem
Additional info from Mike Hart - he has a Toshiba SD-M1102 drive and it doesn't seem to be a problem with H+ driver version 1.50.
      • Lost in Space - the PC Friendly player that comes with it won't work. Use DVD Station instead. The Parental Control bug was fixed by driver v1.50
JTavares found out how to turn the auto-launch of PC Friendly off. Here's how:
        1. Click Start, Run and type in REGEDIT;
        2. Once there, open the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE;
        3. Open the folder SOFTWARE;
        4. Open the folder INTERACTUAL TECHNOLOGIES;
        5. Open the folder PCFRIENDLY;
        6. In the INSTALL directory, change the value of AUTOLAUNCH (by double-clicking on it) from 2 to either 1 (a dialogue box appears asking if you want to launch PC Friendly) or 0 (nothing starts up when you put the Lost in Space DVD in your drive).
    20. What's the best monitor framerate for DVD display?
      • According to Alain, for 24fps movies 72 Hz or 96 Hz should give you the best quality.
      • Mike Hart's suggestion for running at 120 Hz is very good - 120 is divisible by both 24 and 30, so it should be good for both 24 fps and 30 fps movies! Note that not all monitors or video cards can support 120 Hz refresh, and you might have to set your resolution lower.
    21. Playback Freezes
      • If it's not caused a by conflict with some background process (anti-virus software, etc) or a dirty disc, then it might be that the card's either not seated nicely.
      • In very rare cases, it may be a thermal problem.
