Spammo - Frequently Asked Questions[edit] What is Spammo?Spammo is a customer-managed system for identifying, flagging and/or deleting probable spam that works with any LavaNet Email account. Spammo is born! Developed by LavaNet, with feedback from prominent peers within the anti-spam community. Spammo is a professional-grade anti-spam tool. Turn it on and enjoy the results! LavaNet's balanced approach: The methods of spammers change constantly, so an effective spam identification process must evolve alongside the new strategies used by spammers. The cost of a legitimate Email discarded by an overly-aggressive filter can be immense. A balanced approach also calls for a system that is optional, not required. Spammo is an optional service, users are not required to have it enabled, and it can be turned off as easily as it is turned on. Is Spammo a perfect system that will never flag legitimate Email as spam? No. No spam filtering system is perfect; it is impossible to identify what is and is not spam 100% accurately. There are risks: some spam will always get through, and some legitimate mail may be classified as spam. LavaNet has tried to err on the side of caution to reduce the risk of categorizing legitimate mail as spam. [edit] How do I activate Spammo?Spammo is currently available to all LavaNet customers with Email service! Please visit this page to sign up free of charge: https://secure.lava.net/support/utilities/spammo/gimme-spammo.html Once you've used the system a while, you can add extra features like Safety Net and Ohana List, or even opt out of Spammo. [edit] Is there any charge? Monthly fee? There is no setup fee to activate Spammo and use its basic services and there is no recurring monthly fees. It is a value added service that is included with all LavaNet Email accounts. [edit] Once I delete spam marked by Spammo, will they automatically be deleted in the future? No. By default, Spammo is simply tagging any Email it has identified as spam. You can either manually delete them after you have downloaded your Email or you can setup your Email program to filter these messages into your trash or some other mail folder. If you have any questions or need any assistance , please contact our Technical Support Team. [edit] What does Spammo mean anyway?Spam Processing Analyzer with Mail Management Options! Actually, we just thought the name was catchy. We took a customer poll and everyone seemed to like it the best. Thus Spammo was born! [edit] What is a False Positive?A False Positive is any legitimate Email the was incorrectly marked as spam by a filtering system such as Spammo. No filters are 100% accurate, but we are confident that the default Spammo filters can catch between 70%-90% of spam Email and has a very low chance of tagging false positives with its default settings. [edit] What is a False Negative?A False Negative is any spam that did not get tagged by Spammo because it thought it was legitimate Email The results of our beta test have shown that Spammo can accurately identify between 70%-90% of spam Email sent to your account. [edit] What should I do with a False positive and/or False negative sample? The current procedure to report any problems with the Spammo filters, or to request changes in how mail is being filtered is to send your Email to not-spam@lava.net, for false positives, and missed-spam@lava.net, for false negatives. Please include the full headers of the Email message in question and whether it was flagged incorrectly. For more information on full headers, please refer to this the Displaying Email Headers page. If you are unable to provide the full Email headers, we will need you to provide as much information as possible, such as the sender's Email address, the time/date it was received, and the subject line. This will help us to track down the best way to identify the problem. At this time, mailings sent to not-spam@lava.net and missed-spam@lava.net are handled in the order they are received. It is important to note that the current implementation of Spammo does not allow for modification of the filters to prevent false positive or false negative reporting. not-spam@lava.net and missed-spam@lava.net is collecting the data to make this possible in the next phase of Spammo. If you have any questions, please contact our Technical Support Team. [edit] Can I still forward my LavaNet Email and use Spammo at the same time? No. At this time, forwarding your LavaNet Email will override any Spammo settings. Therefore the forwarded Email you receive will not be tagged or managed by Spammo in any way. You may request forwarding here. [edit] Can I use my LavaNet auto-responder with Spammo?Yes, we took this into consideration when designing Spammo. If you have Spammo enabled on your account, LavaNet Email auto-responders will still work. You may request an auto-responder here. [edit] Will Spammo work with any mail program?Yes, Spammo is designed to work behind-the-scenes on LavaNet's mail server. It identifies and marks spam before it reaches your mailbox. Due to this design, Spammo works for all customers, on all computer platforms, using any type of Email reader! Another advantage to using Spammo is that it doesn't require you to purchase or install any additional software or hardware to take advantage of it! Simply sign-up online. [edit] Can I use Spammo with a Non-LavaNet Email account? No. Currently Spammo is exclusively available to use with LavaNet Email accounts only.
[edit] Can I use Spammo if I we are running our own mail server? It depends. If Email is routed directly to your server via the MX record for your domain, than the answer is no. However, if your Email server is setup to check a LavaNet Email account for Email and than disperses it, then Spammo can be used. [edit] Is there a way to tune Spammo to ignore specific legitimate Email addresses that I correspond with?Yes. Use the Ohana List feature! [edit] What are the minimum requirements to use Spammo? You will need the following to take advantage of Spammo's features:
[edit] I used to received a daily Spammo report in my inbox. Now I don't see it. What happened to the report?Initially the daily report was enabled by default for all Spammo users. Since the default Spammo settings only modify the subject line of spams and deliver them to your inbox for your review, it was felt that a summary report of what was tagged as spam was redundant. Currently the daily report is disabled by default. You will only receive a daily report if you enable either "Safety Net" or "Safety Net Plus". [edit] I have multiple LavaNet email accounts. Will Spammo be activated automatically for all of them if I activate one?No. Spammo will only be activated for the username that was entered at the time you sign-up online. If you would like to activate Spammo for additional accounts, please visit the Spammo activation page. [edit] Do I have to download all the spam caught by Spammo? No! While we do suggest that you use Spammo for a while prior to enabling it, there is a "Safety Net" feature which will quarantine your spam in a separate directory. It is stored for up to 10 days or up to 10 MB total storage (if the storage is exceeded, the spam will end up tagged in your inbox - so no email is lost due to home directory quota overruns). A nightly report will tell you the title and sender of each probable spam, so you can go fetch out any legitimate emails Spammo may have accidentally caught. Once you use the Safety Net, you can also opt for using the most aggressive Spammo filters, called "Safety Net Plus". [edit] Can Spammo protect me from Viruses?Spammo can be setup to provide basic anti-virus protection to your account if you enable the Safety Net Plus option. Messages that have suspicious virus attributes will be quarantined along with all messages that have attachments with any of the following filename suffixes: .bat, .ceo, .com, .exe, .js, .lnk, .pif, .scr, .shs, .vbs The only way to disable this feature is to disable Safety Net Plus. Although Spammo can offer some basic anti-virus management options, we strongly recommend you consider investing in a full blown anti-virus software solution such as Norton or McAfee packages since LavaNet is not responsible for ensuring your systems are protected from viral threats. |
