Spammo

Jump to: navigation, search

Spammo is a customer-managed system for identifying, flagging and/or deleting probable spam that works with any LavaNet email account.

Spammo is born! Developed by LavaNet, with feedback from prominent peers within the anti-spam community. Spammo is a professional-grade anti-spam tool. Turn it on and enjoy the results!

LavaNet's balanced approach: The methods of spammers change constantly, so an effective spam identification process must evolve alongside the new strategies used by spammers. The cost of a legitimate email discarded by an overly-aggressive filter can be immense.

A balanced approach also calls for a system that is optional, not required. Spammo is an optional service, users are not required to have it enabled, and it can be turned off as easily as it is turned on.

Is Spammo a perfect system that will never flag legitimate email as spam?

No. No spam filtering system is perfect; it is impossible to identify what is and is not spam 100% accurately. There are risks: some spam will always get through, and some legitimate mail may be classified as spam. LavaNet has tried to err on the side of caution to reduce the risk of categorizing legitimate mail as spam.

Spammo is included with LavaNet email service at no additional charge.

For additional information, please visit our Spammo - Frequently Asked Questions page. Please also visit our status page for any important news and announcements.

Spammo Features

  • Works for all customers, on all computer platforms, using any type of email reader.
  • Flags probable spam for you to download as normal, and review/delete easily. No email is deleted until you delete it. This is the best for spam filtering beginners
  • Comes with standard filters that will catch and flag 70% to 90% of spam! (according to our beta test results).
  • Works with existing mail sorting systems that come packaged with popular email programs such as Eudora, Outlook/Outlook Express and Netscape.

Optional Features

Once Spammo is enabled and you feel familiar with the system, you may want to enable some of these extra features to fight spam even better! After you sign up below, you will receive a Spammo activation email from LavaNet which will include links to activation pages for these extra features:

Ohana List ("WhiteList")

Is Spammo flagging your legitimate email as spam? Customize Spammo to ignore specific addresses that you know are legitimate using the "Ohana List"!

The Ohana List is a self-service feature of Spammo. Currently, you can have up to 100 email addresses in your Ohana list at no charge. Should you prefer for LavaNet to add these for you, there is a $10 fee for each batch of up to ten items you submit.

Safety Net ("Gold2Trash")

Would you prefer not to download any of the Emails flagged as spam by Spammo? The Safety Net service quarantines spam tagged by Spammo on LavaNet's server within your home directory, allowing you to simply ignore them and enjoy a 'cleaner' inbox while still allowing you to review the quarantined messages via daily reports that are emailed to you. The reports will tell you which emails were quarantined by listing the sender and the subject of any Email tagged by Spammo. Any messages marked as spam that is older than 10 days is deleted for you automatically. You can access the quarantine (Trash) folder using our LavaNet Webmail system or via IMAP if your email software supports it. Please contact our Support Team for more details.

To enable this feature, click on the Safety Net link and login with your current LavaNet user information. Once logged in, place a check mark next to "Gold2Trash" to enable the Safety Net feature. To disable this option, simply remove the check mark from the same screen. Once you're done, click on the "main page" link and click on "Click here to log out" to exit the system.

Safety Net Plus ("Spam2Trash")

Still getting too much Spam? Enable Safety-Net Plus if you feel Safety-Net is not catching enough spam to suit your needs. Safety-Net Plus is more aggressive and has a better chance at catching spam than Safety-Net and still offers the same great features such as the daily report and IMAP and LavaNet Webmail accessibility. It will also quarantine all messages that contain executable attachments (with the following file suffixes: .bat, .ceo, .com, .exe, .js, .lnk, .pif, .scr, .shs, .vbs) and any messages with virus related attributes. As with any spam filtering system, adding stricter filtering increases the likelihood that legitimate Email may get falsely tagged as spam. We recommend that you enable this only if you'd like Spammo to catch as much spam as possible before you download your Email and if you're comfortable with Spammo's accuracy. Remember, Email addresses can always be added to your Ohana-List if you want to make sure Spammo ignores them. Please contact our Support Team for more details.

To enable this feature, click on the Safety Net Plus link and login with your current LavaNet user information. Once logged in, place a check mark next to "Spam2Trash" to enable the Safety Net Plus feature. To disable this option, simply remove the check mark from the same screen. Once you're done, click on the "main page" link and click on "Click here to logout" to exit the system.
