Dial Up - Configuring Airport

Jump to: navigation, search

The Airport is an 11 Megabit Lucent WaveLAN card, an ethernet router complete with Network-Address-Translation, and a 56k (k56flex/v90) modem, all in a saucer-shaped package.

Here is how to set it up:

  1. Open the "Macintosh HD" icon
  2. Open the "Apple Extras" folder
  3. Open the "Airport" folder
  4. Open the "Airport Utility" program

Click on "Configure"...

The IP addres in the range 10.x.y.z is chosen as an example because it is by definition unroutable. Unless you have strong reasons for using another range, please use addresses in this range.

The "Airport" Tab

The Subnet Mask should be as small as possible. You COULD use 255.0.0.0, to include all the available addresses in the 10.x.y.y netblock, but in most circumstances, that would lead to each device having to keep track of 16 million different devices, so best to stick with the default values.

The DNS servers should stay as the LavaNet defaults.

The "Network" Tab

Don't disable Encryption.

If your email address was "joebogus@lava.net", then you would put "joebogus" in the username field. But it's not, so substitute with your real username. Also, make sure to set the password with the "Change Password" button.

TCP/IP Configuration Open up the "TCP/IP" Control Panel and configure it as follows:

Leave the "DHCP Client ID:" field empty.
