DSL - Static - Printable - Windows XP

This page describes how to setup Windows 2000 for DSL via DHCP Note: This setup is not recomended for a computer being used as a file server

Prerequisite: You will need to have a properly installed and working Network Interface Card (NIC).
Note: This is the same as setting up the Connection via DHCP
  • Click on the "Start" button.
  • Select "Control Panel".
Note: It might also be "Settings" then "Control Panel"

If it doesn't say "Pick a Category" at the top. Click "Switch to Category View" on the left side of the window.

  • Double Click on "Network and Internet Connections"
  • Select "Setup or change your home or small office network"
  • Select "Next"
  • Select "Next" again.
  • Select "This computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway or through another computer on my network." then press "Next".
  • Enter a Description for the computer. Give the computer a Name then press Next.
  • Enter Workgroup name for the computer. (You can use the default.) Then press Next.
  • Select "Turn off file and printer sharing", and then press Next.
Note: If you have mutiple computers on the network, you could 'Turn On' the sharing if you know how.
  • Select "Next".
  • Wait for the Setup Screen to be done.
  • Select "Just finish the wizard; I don't need to run the wizard on other computers" the press "Next".
  • Select "Finish"
  • It will ask to reboot your computer. Select "Yes" and allow it to reboot.


From here on is different from the DHCP Setup

  • After the computer reboots, Go back to the "Control Panel"
  • Select "Network and Internet Connections"
  • Click on "Network Connections" at the bottom.
  • Click on "Local Area Network"
  • Select "Change Settings of this connection" on the left side of the window.
  • Double Click on "TCP/IP".
  • Click on "Use the following IP address:", then then fill out the "IP address", "Subnet mask", and "Default gateway" fields with the information provided to you by LavaNet.
 Note: If you do not have this information or need assistance, please call LavaNet Tech Support.
  • Click on "Use the following DNS server addresses:".
  • In the "Preferred DNS server" field, type in "64.65.64.1".
  • In the "Alternate DNS server" field, type in "64.65.64.65".
  • Click "OK" out of all of these screens
  • You should now be configured to use your LavaNet DSL.
