In Hawaii, orchids sometimes grow on trees. But this fantasy orchid will grow on you. The Hybrid Cattleya Orchid, upon which this fantasy is based, is developed by crossbreeding in a conservatory. However, each orchid in the wild is fertilized with pollen carried by a particular insect. The size and shape of an orchid's blossoms are specially suited to that insect. Unique markings on the lip guide the insect toward the nectar inside. Pollen sticks to the insect and is then carried to another orchid of the same species. This process assures cross-fertilization within each orchid species, of which over 6,000 grow throughout the world.
