Yellow hibiscus is actually the Hawaii State
Flower.
So why is this one red?*
| The yellow hibiscus, kokio'ula, was named Hawaii's official flower
in 1923. One of 33 species native to the islands, it had become extremely
rare. Hawaii's original 33 have grown to over 5,000 ~ the result of an
intense interest in hybridization |
prompted in 1872 when Oahu's governor, Archibald Cleghorn, crossbred native
Hawaiian hibiscus with foreign species. Like the Hawaii it represents,
the hibiscus is a tribute to the islands' vast diversity.
*Too late. Found out after I painted it in red. |

This representation of the original digital painting is deliberately
smudged in a small area to frustrate pirating of the image.
All prints are personally signed and available in three sizes, each matted
to fit a standard, ready-made frame.
