Tropical Agriculture is Our Business

A Greenhouse Book

Traditionally, food demands are met by putting more land into production. But in large areas of the world, all the land that can be farmed is already in use. In the future, increasing food demands will be met from high production systems on lands already being farmed. High productivity will likely come from the use of high yielding cultivars and from manipulating the environment to minimize the risk of crop failure. In this regard, greenhouse systems, which use artificially controlled environments for plant growth, offer potential not only for increased food production but for efficient resource management with minimal risk to the environment and public health. Greenhouse systems, however, are quite complex and require periodic in-depth reviews of recent research findings to integrate improved technologies into efficient greenhouse systems. This book, entitled "Technology for Greenhouse Systems" and published in 1996, precisely does that. It provides an up-to-date comprehensive review of (i) the role of greenhouse systems in food production worldwide, (ii) greenhouse crops: requirements and production principles and practices, (iii) greenhouse systems: types and features, and (iv) greenhouse technology: system management and crop manipulation.
