Tropical Agriculture is Our Business
1999 Potato Book:
|
Potato production in the tropics is afflicted by several constraints
including diseases and pests, lack of available seed, and improper soil and
crop management. Despite of substantial progress made in the last two
decades in plant breeding and protection, overall tuber yield increases have
been minimal at best. The inherent inability of the potato to grow and yield
under tropical conditions remains as the most limiting factor for successful
production. Given the severe limitations affecting the potato, there is a
need to thoroughly revisit past and current technologies to ascertain those
factors that account for the success or failure of efforts to produce potato
commercially, and review current indigenous and/or adapted technologies
suited to the specific needs of the crop. This 1999 book, entitled
"Potato Production in the Tropics", precisely does that. It
brings under one cover an in-depth analysis of all aspects of potato
production. Major topics covered in the book include (i) potato production
in the tropics: Past and Present, (ii) requirements of the potato crop,
(iii) constraints for potato production, (iv) technology for improved plant
propagation, (v) water management for higher yields, (vi) soil management
for higher yields, and (vii) the potato in multiple cropping systems.
