LANDSYS, A Land Suitability
Assessment System for Food Crop Production
Current changes in world needs for food and fiber are strongly affecting
traditional farming systems in developing countries. New markets for food
crops are creating opportunities for a greater agricultural diversity and,
at the same time, are contributing to improve rural economy. However,
information on when, where, and how to grow food crops is needed to help
farmers to choose cropping systems most appropriate to their lands.
LANDSYS, a Soil Taxonomy-based land assessment
system, has been developed to assist farmers and extension agents to
determine whether a land is suited for a specific crop and
to ascertain the kinds of management inputs needed to achieve a given
level of production. The principle of matching soil and environmental
requirements of the crop to the characteristics of the land is the
foundation of LANDSYS. This book, published in 1991, describes the
conceptual framework of LANDSYS and its development and testing under a wide range of soils and
environments.
